U.S.-Canada trade tensions have escalated, with potential reciprocal tariffs on agricultural goods--including dairy products and farm equipment--expected as early as next month. The tariffs could significantly impact California agriculture, particularly dairy exports to Canada.
: The U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended the application deadline for the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program to Sept. 30 for eligible 2023 and 2024 losses. Added flexibility now exists for certain quality losses for certain crops.
A federal court in California ruled the U.S. Department of Labor's 2025 rule reducing wage rates for H-2A temporary agricultural workers was unlawful, potentially restoring higher Adverse Effect Wage Rate requirements and creating significant backpay costs for agricultural employers.
Assembly Bill 2646, which establishes a $19.75-per-hour minimum wage for certain agricultural employees, passed the California Senate 30-8. The bill now heads to Gov. Newsom for signature or veto and could create additional wage requirements for agricultural employers. It would take effect Jan. 1.
