Trump Administration Plans 300,000 Tons of Beef Imports to Combat Elevated Prices

The Trump administration appears to be moving forward with a plan to waive tariffs on up to 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef during a 90-day period in an attempt to alleviate elevated consumer prices. While details are sparse, including where the planned imports would be from, pushback from many agricultural groups was swift. American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall issued the following statement: “The timing of this proclamation is a gut punch to ranchers’ bottom line. The claim of ensuring these added imports do not ‘disrupt the orderly marketing of commodities in the U.S.’ falls flat when ranchers are now selling their cattle into a market in sharp decline.” AFBF also issued a news release on Wednesday on the topic. Cattle has been one of the few agricultural commodities that has done well in recent years, and an influx of imported ground beef could threaten that success.
