PILOT PROGRAM DESIGNED TO PROVE THAT
AGRICULTURAL CARBON IS A FINANCIAL ASSET
Carbon stored in California agricultural trees and vines can be used as a carbon credit for companies that want to fulfill their carbon neutrality and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.
KEY FINDINGS
- Plants engage in photosynthesis to grow and survive.
- Plant photosynthesis involves the capture of atmospheric carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) via the leaves and, along with sunlight and water, creates sugars for plant growth and reproduction.
- The plant further uses these sugars to build molecules called hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin.
- These molecules form the primary components of the roots, stem, trunk, and branches of a tree or vine.
- Approximately half of these molecules consist of carbon; the same carbon that was captured from the atmosphere by the plant.
- The tree of vine, therefore, is sequestering carbon from the atmosphere in its stem, trunk, roots and branches.
- Companies look to projects that sequester carbon to offset their carbon emissions which lead to climate change.
- The TREEs program quantifies the carbon on your farm so it can be used as a financial carbon asset.
