Congress Passes Funding for Rural Schools
The House overwhelmingly voted in favor of the Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act in a 399-5 vote earlier this week, a bill that would provide an additional $471 million in support of rural education. The legislation is expected to be signed by the president soon. For California, this would likely mean roughly $40 million in support across at least 39 counties. The program was originally established to support rural counties whose tax base was limited by the growing amount of federally controlled lands. Lapses in funding and cuts in recent years put many rural schools and districts at risk, but they will now see a significant boost to help restore support.
