Oriental Fruit Fly Quarantine Lifted in Orange County
Thanks to the cooperation of Orange County residents and local agricultural officials, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), in partnership with the USDA and the Orange County Agricultural Commissioner, has officially lifted the Oriental fruit fly quarantine in the region. The quarantine was enacted following the detection of an infestation in November 2024 and covered parts of Garden Grove, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Fountain Valley, Orange, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach.
The Oriental fruit fly is a destructive invasive pest that can infest more than 250 types of crops—including citrus, fruits, nuts and vegetables—by laying eggs inside the produce. During the quarantine, movement of potential host crops from affected properties was prohibited. Commercial growers were also required to meet strict treatment or processing protocols before harvesting or transporting crops.
