Stakeholders Urge Delay on Final Action for Western Joshua Tree Conservation Plan
The California Fish and Game Commission met on June 12 to discuss and potentially take final action on the draft Western Joshua Tree Conservation Plan. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) released the first draft of the plan in December 2024 and the final draft on June 3.
Although the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act statutorily requires the Commission to take final action on the plan by June 30, various stakeholders—including Farm Bureau—and members of the public urged the Commission to delay its decision until the August meeting, citing concerns that nine days was not sufficient time to review and provide meaningful input.
Farm Bureau is part of a coalition that includes water and business organizations, as well as local governments, all working to address unresolved issues in the plan that affect the ability of people and communities to thrive alongside Joshua trees. The Commission’s next meeting is scheduled for August 13–14. Staff Contact: Richard Filgas, rfilgas@cfbf.com
