POSITION TITLE: Director and Counsel, Legal Advocacy
REPORTABILITY: Vice President of Legal Advocacy
SALARY RANGE: $100,000.00 to $120,000.00 per year
SUMMARY:
The Legal Advocacy Team at the California Farm Bureau (CAFB) is actively seeking an attorney with water experience. We are looking for someone skilled in navigating legal matters related to water allocation, usage, quality, rights and related natural resource impacts. The attorney will advise California Farm Bureau (CAFB) and member county Farm Bureaus on managing water matters through complex state and Federal laws and regulations, often representing them in litigation concerning disputes before administrative agencies and courts. The attorney will be an integral part of the Legal Advocacy Team and will be fully engaged in policy development activities and advocacy for CAFB.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Legal research and analysis of complex water rights issues, including case law, statutes, and administrative regulations as well as preparation of pleadings, briefs, and comments letters that present the position of CAFB.
- Advise CAFB and its county Farm Bureau members on complex water issues.
- Represent CAFB effectively in negotiations and disputes, including court appearances and agency proceedings.
- Collaborate with internal and external teams to formulate and execute strategic legal actions and support CAFB’s objectives.
- Travel to attend meetings or regulatory hearings as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and member in good standing of the California Bar Association.
- Strong understanding of water law, including State and Federal statutes, regulations, and case law related to water rights.
- Fundamental understanding of the State Groundwater Management Act.
- Experience in legal research, writing, and litigation.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills to interact with members, agencies, and opposing counsel.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team.
- Familiarity with relevant environmental regulations and their impact on water rights.
