Imports of cattle and other livestock from Mexico have continued via the phased reopening of the Douglas, Arizona port. Most recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the ending of two “infested zones” within Texas as progress appears to have been made on mitigation and eradication efforts. As of writing, there are only three active cases in the U.S., all of which are in Texas along the U.S.-Mexico border. While cases continue to creep up in the Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua, full inspections and treatments of imported livestock are intended to mitigate any threats of expansion of New World screwworm. USDA is similarly watching those states closely, as any major increases could lead to the temporary closing of the Douglas port.
