Hill Navigates Funding Deadlines, House to Leave Early

Earlier this week, the House of Representatives voted on a short-term funding agreement that would keep the government funded through Dec. 11 in a 370-48 vote. The Senate previously passed the measure prior to the August recess for both chambers. House Republican leadership later announced that votes for the remainder of September had been canceled, meaning their planned work periods through the remainder of the month are unlikely to happen. This will give lawmakers a few extra weeks for in-district work and campaigning as the midterm elections draw nearer.
While several major legislative hurdles remain, it appears unlikely the House will return prior to the election unless the Senate passes a party-line reconciliation package. If that happens, House members will likely return to Washington, D.C., for a similar vote. The Senate is expected to continue its work in September, with hopes that the Agriculture Committee could still pass the farm bill out of committee.
