Boozman Hopes for Bipartisan Recess Work to Complete Farm Bill

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman, R-Ark., is calling for bipartisan discussions to resolve outstanding issues standing in the way of a final farm bill. The House passed its version on April 30; the Senate Agriculture Committee approved its version on a party-line vote Sept. 16.
Discussions to resolve minor differences between the two versions are believed to be occurring between majority staff of the agriculture committees, and agriculture advocates are hoping for a bipartisan "soft conference" during the recess to allow completion of a farm bill during the expected lame-duck session.
Senate Agriculture Appropriations Chairman John Hoven, R-N.D., tells Agri-Pulse Newsmakers he's confident a deal is in the offing: "I've talked to Republicans and Democrats, and you know, obviously the issue's been SNAP,” he said, referring to partisan differences on fraud-reduction reform proposals for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. "We've offered a very fair compromise, and I really think we'll get it done in the lame duck."
