Farm Bureau Move to 'Neutral' Position on New Wolf-Livestock Coexistence Bill
Published Friday, May 22, 2026
California Farm Bureau is now neutral on Senate Bill 1135 by Catherine Blakespear, D-Encinitas, a measure related to California’s Wolf-Livestock Compensation Program. The bill would establish minimum noninvasive nonlethal deterrent requirements that livestock producers must implement to qualify for direct livestock loss and pay-for-presence compensation payments through the program.
According to legislative analyses, SB 1135 is estimated to cost approximately $28.2 million in its first year of implementation and roughly $23.2 million annually thereafter. The bill recently passed out of the Senate Appropriations Committee Suspense File and is currently awaiting a vote on the Senate floor. The proposal comes in addition to California Farm Bureau’s separate budget request seeking $48 million to support the Wolf-Livestock Compensation Program, including funding for GPS collar expansion and additional wolf management resources.
