CDFA and Farm Bureau Seek Stories of Veterinary Gaps for Food-Animal Producers
Published Friday, May 22, 2026
The California Department of Food and Agriculture, in partnership with California Farm Bureau, is seeking input from food-animal producers who have experienced challenges accessing veterinary care for livestock and other food animals.
The information collected may help support future efforts to improve veterinary service availability in rural and agricultural communities, including expanding veterinary shortage area designations and participation in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program. Through the program, veterinarians who commit to serving designated shortage areas for at least three years may qualify for up to $40,000 annually and up to $120,000 over three years in student loan repayment assistance.
Producer feedback could help strengthen efforts to improve long-term access to food animal veterinary care in underserved areas across California. The survey takes only a few minutes to complete.
