President Voices Support for Federal Gas Tax 'Holiday'
Published Friday, May 15, 2026
President Donald Trump recently expressed interest in temporarily suspending the federal gas tax as fuel prices remain elevated amid ongoing conflict involving Iran. While no formal action has been taken, legislation related to a potential gas tax “holiday” is expected to be introduced in both chambers of Congress.
The current federal fuel tax is 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel. Revenue generated from the tax supports the Highway Trust Fund, which helps fund federal transportation and infrastructure programs and has experienced funding challenges in recent years.
Lawmakers and stakeholders continue to discuss the potential impacts such a suspension could have on fuel prices, infrastructure funding and transportation programs.
