USDA Announces New Framework for Migratory Big Game Conservation
Published Friday, June 5, 2026
On June 2, the U.S. Department of Agriculture launched Migratory Big Game: A Framework for Conservation Action, a conservation strategy that brings together state, federal and tribal partners across 17 states to protect migratory species such as elk, mule deer and pronghorn. The framework aims to conserve wildlife while supporting farmers and ranchers by keeping working lands productive. It focuses on addressing major threats to big game populations, including habitat loss, landscape fragmentation, invasive species and barrier to migration.
The framework will use existing farm bill conservation programs administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Farm Service Agency to implement three main strategies: protecting habitat and migration corridors; reducing barriers such as wildlife-unfriendly fencing; and improving habitat quality through restoration and land management practices. Building on lessons from the Working Lands for Wildlife Program, USDA intends to work with state wildlife agencies and other partners to prioritize conservation efforts that benefit wildlife populations and agricultural operations across the western United States.
