Wildfire Mitigation Bills Advance in Legislature

Two California Farm Bureau-supported wildfire measures continued advancing through the state legislative process this week. Assembly Bill 2410 by Stan Ellis, R-Bakersfield, unanimously passed the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee and now heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee. The bill would codify Gov. Newsom's executive order streamlining permitting wildfire mitigation projects, helping accelerate critical vegetation management and fuel reduction efforts throughout California.
Meanwhile, Senate Bill 899 by Shannon Grove, R-Bakersfield, which California Farm Bureau co-sponsored, was placed on the Assembly Appropriations Committee suspense file. The bill would require the state to track the public health impacts of wildfire smoke to better quantify the healthcare savings associated with reducing catastrophic wildfire emissions through proactive forest management.
California Farm Bureau supports both measures as part of broader efforts to improve wildfire resilience, streamline fuels reduction projects and better quantify the public health benefits of proactive wildfire management.
