President Seeks New Tariffs Against Canada
Published Friday, July 24, 2026
This week, President Trump announced plans to impose new tariffs on Canada due to trade practices he says negatively affect the U.S. automotive, alcohol and dairy industries. The proposal includes a 50% tariff on certain Canadian imports beginning in late August.
The president cited provincial restrictions on alcohol sales, including wine, and differences between the dairy tariff-rate quotas established under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement and those included in Canada’s trade agreement with the European Union.
Canada is California’s largest agricultural export market, receiving significant quantities of dairy products, wine, and fresh fruits and vegetables. With the USMCA review underway, it remains unclear how the proposed tariffs could affect negotiations.
