Colorado River Final Environmental Impact Statement Expected Next Week

Recent reporting suggests that the U.S. Department of the Interior will release a proposal for managing Colorado River water allocations sometime next week. States have been negotiating since late last year on how to manage the river’s depleted water supply, but the federal government has warned that it will move forward with its own proposal if the deadlock persists.
Disagreements remain between the Upper Basin states—Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming—and the Lower Basin states—California, Arizona and Nevada—on mandatory versus voluntary water-use reductions. Because the Colorado River supplies a significant portion of Southern California’s water, California Farm Bureau and other interested parties are closely monitoring the negotiations.
