US Formally Declines Long-Term USMCA Extension
Published Friday, July 10, 2026
Last week, the U.S. formally declined a 16-year extension of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA. Originally a signature accomplishment of the first Trump administration, President Trump has soured on the deal and has voiced displeasure with growing trade imbalances dating back to last year. USMCA is still in place and will remain so through 2036, but July 1 represented the first “review” date for the countries. Per the original agreement, all three countries had the option to accept a 16-year extension. Instead, this year’s review process will give way to regular, annual reviews. Groups from all three countries have been negotiating in recent months and will continue to do so through July.
