Wine Labeling Bill Advances with Strong Bipartisan Support
Published Friday, April 24, 2026
Assembly Bill 1585 by Assemblymember Damon Connolly, D-San Rafael, and Assemblymember Rhodesia Ransom, R-Stockton, was heard this week in the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee. The bill ensures truth in labeling by requiring wines labeled “American” to be made from 100% U.S.-grown grapes.
This measure is intended to protect consumers while recognizing the multigenerational winegrape growers who take pride in the origin and quality of California’s world-class wines. The California Farm Bureau has identified AB 1585 as a priority this session and has worked closely with the California Association of Winegrape Growers, the bill’s sponsor.
AB 1585 passed out of committee on a strong bipartisan vote of 18-0 and now moves to the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Farm Bureau will continue working with partners to advance the bill through the Assembly.
