US Bureau of Reclamation Make Cuts to Colorado River Allocations
Published Friday, April 24, 2026
Late last week, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation announced plans to adjust allocations along the Colorado River as a result of historic drought. Per the release, reclamation plans to add up to nearly 2.48-million acre-feet of water to Lake Powell by moving water from the upstream Flaming Gorge Reservoir and by reducing releases from the lake. The hope is to increase the lake’s elevation by approximately 54 feet by this time next year. The agency acknowledged there will be downstream impacts and reduced flow, including the potential generating capacity of Hoover Dam, into the fall.
