FDA Proposes to Reduce Mandated Sugar Levels in Orange Juice

Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration moved forward with a proposed rulemaking that would effectively lower the mandated sugar content level, or Brix, within pasteurized orange juice. Currently at 10.5%, the proposal would lower it to 10%. The change is largely in response to challenges faced by the Florida citrus industry over the past many years, as citrus greening has reduced the natural levels found in their oranges. Formal American Farm Bureau Federation policy was changed this past year to support such a measure, which is now in an open public comment period through Nov. 4.
