White House to Implement Some New Tariffs--Delay Others
Following the White House’s 90-day pause on “Liberation Day” tariffs, the Trump administration is expected to move forward with enforcement on certain countries while continuing delays for others. Most notably, Japan and South Korea could soon face a 25% tariff increase, while Brazil may see tariffs rise to 50% by the end of the month.
President Trump has cited trade imbalances and Brazil’s political treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro as justification for the hike—despite the U.S. currently maintaining a nearly $7 billion trade surplus with the country. This contradiction has added confusion to early responses, and additional clarity is expected in the coming days. Several smaller countries with U.S. trade deficits are also on track to face new tariffs by the end of the month. Staff contact: Matthew Viohl, mviohl@cfbf.com
