USDA Announces $263 Million in New Direct Food Purchases

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced its intention to purchase up to $263 million in dairy and other agricultural products under the Section 32 discretionary authority. This authority gives the department the ability to directly purchase commodities for communities in need and other nutrition programs. The breakdown includes nearly $150 million for butter, cheese products and milk, as well as $15 million for fresh pears, $15 million for walnuts, with most of the remaining for various legumes.
