California Farm Bureau Joins Coalition Letter to EPA on Renewable Fuel Standard
Published Friday, February 13, 2026
Late last month, California Farm Bureau joined a coalition of organizations in urging U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Lee Zeldin to modernize and expand the treatment of woody biomass under the renewable fuel standard.
The letter notes that while Congress intended forest-based biomass to qualify under the renewable fuel standard’s cellulosic biofuel pathway, outdated and overly narrow regulatory interpretations have limited participation by working forests.
Expanding eligibility could help strengthen domestic timber markets while supporting forest health and wildfire risk reduction efforts—priorities that align with the Trump administration’s interest in increasing U.S. timber production and improving forest management.
