House and Senate Pass Various Funding Packages Ahead of Jan. 30 Deadline
The House and Senate are making their way through several spending packages to avoid an upcoming Jan. 30 deadline to keep the government open. Separate measures in both the House and Senate passed with supermajorities, showing a more bipartisan approach as opposed to the extended shutdown that began last fall. There are some key hurdles to go, with funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security now up in the air following the most recent stories regarding the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minnesota in recent weeks. In addition, planned off weeks for the House and Senate might impact the timing of votes for both chambers. For now, lawmakers seem generally hopeful a shutdown can be avoided.
