REPORTS TO: Accounting Supervisor
DEPARTMENT: Financial Services
SALARY RANGE: $71,000 to $77,000
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Staff Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and usefulness of the organization's financial information. This position performs moderate to complex professional accounting responsibilities that require sound independent judgment, strong analytical skills, relevant experience, and a thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The role is actively involved in monthly close activities, reconciliations, and analytical reporting that support informed decision‑making across the organization.

This position maintains primary responsibility for assigned functional areas, including affiliated companies and foundations, and provides reliable technical accounting support within established policies and procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES
General Ledger, Close & Financial Reporting
- Prepare complex journal entries and supporting schedules in accordance with GAAP.
- Support monthly close activities by providing accurate schedules, analysis, and documentation.
- Research and resolve account reconciliation variances and discrepancies independently.
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements and management reports.
Revenue, Billing & Deferred Revenue
- Review customer agreements and non‑standard billing arrangements to ensure accurate billing and revenue recognition.
- Reconcile membership dues revenue to system reports, cash receipts, deferred revenue, general ledger activity, and prepare related journal entries.
Grant, Intercompany & Specialized Accounting
- Maintain accounting for assigned grants, including revenue, deferred revenue, and expenditure reconciliations.
- Prepare intercompany billings and reconcile related receivable and payable balances.
- Calculate commissions, bonuses, and other analytical schedules with supporting documentation.
Audit, Compliance & Operational Support
- Prepare schedules and respond to requests in support of annual audits and tax filings.
- Support operational accounting activities such as lobbyist reporting and postage allocations.
Process Improvement & Team Support
- Assist with documenting and improving accounting processes and internal controls.
- Provide backup support for accounting operations, including banking, accounts payable, and accounts receivable functions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or equivalent professional experience.
- 2-4 years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience.
- Working knowledge of GAAP and general accounting procedures.
- Experience applying accounting principles to non‑routine transactions and resolving discrepancies independently.
- Experience with NetSuite preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and handle competing priorities effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
