Life on the Farm

First Prize

Kathy Hutchison - Sacramento County
First Prize

Having been raised on a farm, 4-year-old Taylor Hutchison thinks she can do everything, but she’s just not big enough. The Hutchison family raises about 100 head of polled Hereford and Angus cattle in Amador County and was moving them to their ranch in Sloughhouse. As she carried the rope to the corral for her dad, Don Hutchison, grandma Kathy caught a precious father-daughter moment.

Second Prize

Mary Vanoni - Ventura County
Second Prize

One minute it was there and the next minute it was gone. The shock of seeing the house she was born in disappear before her eyes prompted Mary Vanoni to preserve memories of the 100-year-old family farm in Saticoy. Now, all that remains of the original 125-acre family farm are 80 avocado trees, a house, the shed and a few fruit trees. "It’s all going away," Mary said, who added she was compelled to photograph the incredible texture of old farm implements in the shed.

Third Prize

Sandra Milberg - Sonoma County
Third Prize

Sandra Milberg trains working border collies and enters them in various sheepdog trials around the country. On her way to a field trial, she stopped at a friend’s summer home for a bit of practice with her dogs and five sheep. With no familiar corral, Sandra often found the sheep in the strangest places – once lined up like soldiers on the back of a flatbed truck. On this day, she was able to capture an image of the sheep patiently waiting on the front porch.
