Farm Bureau praises passage of endangered-species law

Calling it a "historic step," the state's largest farm organization praised today's vote in the House of Representatives on behalf of the Threatened and Endangered Species Recovery Act of 2005.

"Today, under the leadership of Representative Richard Pombo, the House took a historic step in making endangered-species law more protective of species and more workable for private landowners who help protect those species," California Farm Bureau Federation President Bill Pauli said.

"After working on this issue for many years, Representative Pombo, Representative Dennis Cardoza and other congressional leaders have hit upon a winning formula for species and for farmers everywhere," Pauli said.

"The Endangered Species Act revisions approved today update a law that was in serious need of modernization and of better tools to help save species from extinction," Pauli said. "Instead of penalizing landowners, this law makes partners of private landowners who want to help with species recovery.

"The California Farm Bureau looks forward to the upcoming debate in the Senate. We encourage continued bipartisan efforts to update the Endangered Species Act," he said.

The California Farm Bureau Federation works to protect family farms on behalf of nearly 87,000 members statewide.
