Wet winter needed

California needs a wet winter to replenish water supplies after three years of below average precipitation. At a Winter Outlook Workshop in San Diego this week, weather researchers reported conflicting data on whether the winter will be wet or dry. But most expressed optimism the season won't be a dry one. Scientists discussed the outlook for Northern California and the Upper Colorado River at the workshop sponsored by the California Department of Water Resources.

Winegrape growers adjust to recession caused change

Winegrape growers are adjusting to a changing market for grapes as a result of the economic recession. Some growers have had difficulty selling their fruit as wineries adjust to slowing sales. Demand for grapes that go into higher priced wines seems to have taken the biggest hit. Consumers are shifting to lower priced wines, and while some economists say demand for higher prices wines will recover, that won't happen in the short term.

Farm advisors suggest mushrooms for family farmers

Mushrooms as a viable crop for small family farms was suggested to growers attending a workshop in the San Joaquin Valley. Farm advisors say production costs can be low while growers can earn good prices for their mushrooms at farmers markets. Mushrooms are not easy to grow, but advisors suggested that a family could grow the mushrooms without additional labor. The spawn or "seeds" for the mushrooms can be purchased from various vendors.

More Medflies found in San Diego County

Another Mediterranean fruit fly infestation has been found in San Diego County. Officials are preparing a quarantine zone in Fallbrook where the flies were found. Aerial release of sterile Medflies has begun in an area of more than nine square miles around the site where the flies were found. Thus far two adult males and a mated female have been detected in traps. Residents are urged to consume homegrown fruits and vegetables at their homes and not move them out of the area.
