Ag expert shares optimism at Farm Bureau's annual meeting
The chief executive officer of an agricultural-policy think tank is optimistic for agriculture's continued success. But, he says the sector needs to become more strategic in its approach to shaping policy on a state and national level. Gary Blumenthal told the California Farm Bureau annual meeting Tuesday he thinks California's lawmakers can lead the way to shape those new policies, but admits they will be met with challenges. He said newly elected leaders in Washington are skeptical about trade.
Rancher honored for environmental stewardship
Glenn County cattle rancher Chet Vogt has earned the 2008 Leopold Conservation Award for exemplary environmental stewardship. Vogt was recognized Monday at the California Farm Bureau's 90th annual meeting in Burlingame. The honor is presented each year by the Sand County Foundation, the California Farm Bureau Federation and Sustainable Conservation. Vogt often hosts workshops on Three Creeks Ranch to educate ranchers, regulators and environmental scientists about his innovative practices.
Farm Bureau notes members' distinguished service
Distinguished Service Awards were given Monday to two members of the agricultural community at the California Farm Bureau annual meeting in Burlingame. Tulare County farmer C. Paul Johnson was honored for more than 60 years of service to agriculture and his community. Northern California cattle rancher and conservationist Dan Byrne, who died in October, was given the award posthumously. The Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor bestowed by the California Farm Bureau.
Farmers and ranchers hope for different weather conditions
Winegrape growers are hoping for cold temperatures so their vines go dormant and they can begin pruning for next year. In contrast, cattle ranchers hope for rain to nourish rangeland grasses and provide water for their animals. Rain would help germinate seeds not yet reached by moisture, while frost might nip the young grass. The weekend forecast is for rain and colder temperatures.
