2:15-3:30 p.m.Getting the Most from the Masses:  Engaging Members in Membership Efforts
It is no secret that those who do something often end up doing everything. You probably have a few rock-star members who do it all; serve on the county board, advocate in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., sign up new members, attend state conferences and set up the chairs for the county Annual Meeting. (You may even be that person.) We need helpful people to pitch in when needed. More importantly, we need the right people for the right job—maybe even a job someone didn't know they were ready to do. What abilities and resources can your members contribute? Identifying what others do well and calling them to do their best is a key capacity of leadership. During this session, learn about how to identify the strengths of your membership and put those strengths to work in your county organization.

Strike a Chord:  How to Capitalize on the Issues that Matter to Members
Are there issues that make sense on paper, but fall on deaf ears when mobilizing your membership? Do you struggle to communicate to potential members the importance of the work Farm Bureau does? What resonates with people and calls them to take action—either by joining the organization or taking action on a policy issue? During this session, learn about the role of emotion in both signing new members and mobilizing current members. You will leave with a new perspective on signing members, as well as strategies for mobilizing the people you already have.

Stick Around for Awhile:  Strategies for Membership Retention
Whether you are losing members faster than you can count or just a few drop out each year, there is always room for improvement in membership retention. Additionally, consider the members who may not stop paying dues, but rather just stop showing up for Farm Bureau functions: In a different way, that's just as detrimental to the organization. During this session, learn about the reasons and discover a model for understanding why members join the organization, why they stick around, and how to help them figure out their place in Farm Bureau.
Presented by: Kyle Perry, Director, Leadership Development, AFBF

The End of Farm Labor Abundance
Demographic and economic changes in Mexico and limited sources of farm labor elsewhere mean agriculture will eventually have to adjust production methods to use less labor. The decline in foreign labor supply to U.S. farms ultimately will need to be offset by conserving farm labor, switching to less labor-intensive crops and technologies, and implementing labor-management practices that match fewer, more highly skilled workers with more technically demanding farm jobs.
Moderator: Carl Borden, Associate Counsel, CFBF
