White Rice
How much water does it take to make a serving of white rice?
A) 25.1 gallons B) 42.5 gallons
C) 62.8 gallons
Rice is grown in water. Every year before planting, rice farmers flood their fields a few inches deep. Most rice is planted from airplanes, which drop the seed through the water into the soil below. Then the rice plant grows up through the water. Before harvesting, the water is drained off the field. Rice is also processed after harvest. At the mill, the rice hull is removed to allow the grain inside to be eaten. White rice undergoes further processing, to remove the bran. How much water does it take to create a half-cup serving?
