The perfect soil

September/October 2008

The best soil for square foot gardening is lightweight and nutrient-rich. It should also hold moisture, yet drain well. For the perfect soil, mix equal parts peat moss, vermiculite and compost.

  • Peat moss: The partially decomposed remains of various mosses, peat moss is a highly water-retentive, spongy organic soil amendment that tends to add to the acidity of the soil.
  • Vermiculite: The mineral mica is heated and puffed up to form lightweight, sponge-like granules that retain moisture and air within the soil. Tip: Buy the coarse grade.
  • Compost: This mixture of decaying organic matter such as garden and kitchen refuse is used to improve soil structure and provide nutrients. Tip: If you buy compost rather than make your own, it’s essential to blend a couple of kinds together.
