From the Fields
A firsthand report from California farmers
December 20, 2006
Ed Terry
Ventura County diversified grower
Strawberry harvest is in full swing in Ventura County and it looks to be a good harvest season with ample production. Pricing for the berries is as variable as ever with many areas still in production, due to the nice weather in all the growing districts.
The celery crop has just started harvesting and plantings will continue weekly until March with the harvesting to continue until July. Again, with the good weather the celery is growing very nicely and the harvest looks good.
The bell pepper crop ended in mid-November with a good overall season; however, there were many challenges with insect pressure that hasn't been seen in many years.
The spring berry crop is in the ground and it looks like the harvesting will start around Christmas; the young transplants suffered some set-back with the high temperatures of early November, but with more moderate temperatures it should still start on time.
